A Northwest Phoenix Intersection's Third Severe Crash in Under Two Years Renews Safety Questions

For the third time in under two years, the intersection of 51st Avenue and Bell Road in northwest Phoenix was the scene of a serious crash, after a two-vehicle rollover collision sent three people to the hospital late Thursday night, September 12, according to Hoodline, citing the Phoenix Fire Department and reports from KTAR News 92.3 FM and 12News.

Phoenix Fire Department crews responding to the crash found one vehicle flipped onto its roof; all seven occupants of both vehicles had managed to get out before firefighters arrived, Hoodline reported. Three people were transported to hospitals in stable condition, while four others declined medical transport at the scene, per the same report. The cause of the crash has not been publicly released.

The rollover follows two other serious collisions at the same intersection within the past two years. On the overnight of September 3, 2026, a multi-vehicle crash at 51st and Bell shut the intersection down in all directions and left four people hospitalized, including a 16-year-old girl in critical condition who had to be extricated from the wreckage, according to Hoodline's report citing the Phoenix Fire Department and azfamily.com. A 17-year-old girl and two adults were also hospitalized in stable condition. Because of the severity of that crash, Phoenix police assigned the case to the department's Vehicular Crimes Unit, which Hoodline reported uses 3D laser scanning technology to reconstruct major collisions.

Further back, on December 20, 2024, a car turning left onto Bell Road was struck by an SUV at the same intersection; the impact pushed both vehicles onto the sidewalk, where they struck a man in a wheelchair, who was not injured, and narrowly missed a nearby school bus, Hoodline reported, citing Phoenix police. Beyonce Vasquez, a 17-year-old occupant of the car, died from her injuries at the hospital; a teenage male passenger was hospitalized in stable condition. Hoodline also reported that a motorcycle collision occurred at the intersection in February 2026, though details of that crash were not included in available reporting.

Taken together, Hoodline's coverage describes 51st Avenue and Bell Road as having "seen at least three severe or fatal collisions in under two years" — a pattern that echoes the city's own Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan, which tracks a "High Injury Network" of Phoenix streets where crashes are most frequent and severe. That same High Injury Network designation applies to Van Buren Street on the city's west side, where a separate crash on September 10 killed a sedan driver after the car became wedged beneath a semi-truck at 75th Avenue and Van Buren Street — a stretch with its own history of a fiery multi-truck crash in November 2025, according to Hoodline's reporting citing Phoenix police.

Neither the Phoenix Police Department nor Phoenix's Street Transportation Department has publicly announced an engineering review or design change specific to 51st Avenue and Bell Road in connection with the September crashes.

None of the news reports reviewed identified a common contributing factor — such as signal timing, a sightline obstruction, or a roadway design flaw — tying the three 51st-and-Bell incidents together, and Phoenix police have not stated that the crashes are considered related. For drivers navigating this stretch of northwest Phoenix, especially at night, the intersection's recent history is a reminder to approach with extra caution regardless of signal indications.
