September 7, 2026 — Arizona

A motorcyclist died early Sunday morning after colliding with a car on Cactus Road near its overpass with State Route 51 in north Phoenix, according to Arizona's Family and KTAR News.

Phoenix police and fire personnel responded to the crash at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2026, KTAR News reported, citing the Phoenix Police Department. First responders found both the motorcyclist and the driver of the car at the scene, according to KTAR. The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Arizona's Family reported. His identity had not been released as of the most recent reporting.

Unlike some other recent fatal crashes in the Phoenix area, the driver of the car remained at the scene, Arizona's Family reported. Phoenix police said detectives were still working to determine what led up to the crash, according to Arizona's Family's report. Neither outlet's coverage specified a cause, named contributing factors, or indicated whether any citations had been issued as of publication.

It was the second fatal motorcycle crash on Cactus Road in Phoenix this year. On May 1, 2026, 58-year-old Michael John Webb was killed near 33rd Avenue and Cactus Road — about four miles west of Sunday's crash site — when a westbound driver failed to yield and struck his motorcycle, according to KTAR News. In that case, the driver left the scene and was not present when police arrived, KTAR reported; available reporting does not indicate whether that case has since been resolved.

Sunday's crash comes during a difficult stretch on Phoenix streets. In the preceding days, two pedestrians were struck and killed in separate incidents roughly 24 hours apart — one near 7th Avenue and Indian School Road on Sept. 4, the other near 33rd Drive and Deer Valley Road on Sept. 5 — and a two-vehicle crash near 59th Avenue and Thomas Road on Sept. 4 left four adults in critical condition, according to reporting from Arizona's Family, FOX 10 Phoenix and KTAR News reviewed for this report. Statewide, ADOT reported on Aug. 27 that Arizona's overall traffic fatalities fell 5.2% in 2025 versus 2024, the third consecutive annual decline, even as individual serious crashes like Sunday's continue to occur on Phoenix arterial roads.

Phoenix police have not announced any charges in connection with Sunday's crash. The department's Vehicular Crimes Unit, which investigates fatal collisions in the city, has not released further details on the cause. Anyone with information has been directed to contact Phoenix police.
